Settings Other Than Schools
Initial Teacher Training with museums, libraries and archives
"I feel my knowledge of how the Library Service works and how best to use it will be useful and may also be a selling point when applying for my first job."
The Benefits

Placements provide museum, library and archive (mla) staff and Trainee Teachers with opportunities to share new ideas, be creative and enhance teaching skills. Placements promote better understanding of learning potential. Mlas learn about mapping collections and resources to the National Curriculum whilst trainees learn how to match mla resources to learning both within the mla (the school visit) and in the classroom.
Museums, Libraries and Archives achieve:
- Access to users of the future and the opportunity to assist in developing the skills of new teachers.
- Increased ability to map activity against the QTS Standards.
- Increased capacity to develop creative learning programmes that address teachers needs.
Trainee teachers have an opportunity to:
- Analyse, observe and critically assess the learning in out of school contexts and compare it to the classroom experience - understanding the power of learning in informal contexts.
- Develop their knowledge of resources which mlas have to offer to teachers - demonstrating how classroom learning and teaching can be enriched and extended.
ITT Providers achieve:
- Innovative practice.
- Development of collaborative work with external partners.
- A network of placement venues for 'settings other than schools'.
- An opportunity to draw on additional expertise in teaching through contacts with mla mentors.
