Background & Context

TTA and DfES Guidelines

The most recent QTT Standards contain two key references:

  • Standard 3.1.5 - trainees must be able to demonstrate "they are able to plan opportunities for pupils to learn in out-of-school contexts".
  • R2.5 which defines the minimum number of days trainees must spend in schools. "Teaching in settings other than school may also count towards these totals."

Clearly the TTA are giving ITT providers an opportunity to move away from convention and forge new partnerships in alternative settings.

The revised standards coincided with new strategy documents published by DfES in 2003 including Excellence and Enjoyment.

"Children learn better when they are excited and engaged - but what excites and engages them best is truly excellent teaching, which challenges them and shows them what they can do. When there is joy in what they are doing, they learn to love learning."

Charles Clark - Foreword to "Excellence and Enjoyment" (DfES 2003)

"Ofsted reports show that the best primary schools combine high standards with a broad and rich curriculum."
