The Process

Induction & Mentoring

planning the placement, Yorkshire Sculpture Park

In order for partnerships and placements to be successful the quality of mentoring by museum, library and archive staff has to be of a high standard. YMLAC has invested in significant training in this area and there are now many organisations and individual staff in our region who have an understanding and experience of mentoring trainee teachers.

If you would like support and advice on mentoring check out our forum section for colleagues who can help and look out for any future funding, partnership building and training YMLAC can provide.

Everyone involved in a placement would benefit from an induction programme and scheduled times when meetings can take place between trainee, mentor and course tutor. Experience has taught us that close liaison with the partner school is worthwhile too. See this example: Cartwright Hall - Programme for Trainee Placement [26.5kb]

Museum, library and archive staff should appreciate that working with a trainee teacher could be a new kind of placement, very different from the usual student research project or work experience. Usually an ITT placement won't operate independently and will require the commitment and management of an individual mentor. Most mentors have underestimated the time required to spend on the placement but have appreciated the payback given the extra resources it required.
