Initial Teacher Training with museums, libraries and archives
Mla Checklist
Along with the other partners there are a number of important issues that any museum, library or archive will need to appreciate before embarking on a placement. Here are some key considerations:
- Placements need to offer substantial experience for trainees, not just one day / one student / one school
- It is essential that mlas are responsible for assessment of trainees on placement. There has to be a significant contribution from mlas. Therefore training for mla mentors is essential.
- It is important to make sure that placements provide something that has an impact back in school and that an mla experience isn't just 'a nice thing to do'.
- A long-term aim is the realisation of the support that mlas can offer a teacher in school.
- All placements are different but they need to achieve the same outcomes, how they get there can be achieved by a variety of means.
- Placements are an excellent opportunity for mlas to network with teachers and develop sustainable partnerships with schools.
- Your placement should demonstrate and share good practice - it is important that there is capacity within the placement for time to share and disseminate.
- Mla placements will challenge any of your inflexible structures.
- Placements should offer consistency but demonstrate flexibility.
