Monitoring & Feedback

feedback at Yorkshire Museum

Each ITT provider may use different forms to monitor and evaluate placements.

When conducting placements it is worth talking to the provider involved to try to harmonise any collecting evidence and recording observations with pro formas that they use themselves. Assuming that in planning your placement you have agreed the aims and objectives and have combined an area of work with particular QTT Standards, then coping with filling in forms shouldn't be a problem.

There have been attempts to harmonise the paperwork that different providers use to monitor and evaluate placements. This TTA Assessment Template [35.0kb]  includes some of the regularly used terms that providers use. It can be used to develop your own assessment documents. Your partner provider won't be looking for complicated and elaborate evaluation and assessment documents.

This document: Yorkshire Sculpture Park - Placement Observation [26.0kb], demonstrates a form used by the University of Leeds. Again it's fairly simple. It was used to evaluate a placement at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

A group of participating mla staff and staff from universities worked on a generic monitoring form for us. They believed that it would be an acceptable pro forma for most providers and would meet the requirements of placements in settings other than schools. A blank pacement record: Placement Record - Blank [31.0kb] is available for you to use or adapt.

Several placements have used the generic document already and some have adapted them to meet their specific needs. Here is an example of the form adapted to include the Museum, Library and Archive Council's Inspiring Learning For All, Generic Learning Outcomes: Placement Record with GLOs - Blank [46.0kb].

Another example takes the form one step further and along with the inclusion of Generic Learning Outcomes has separate sections for the trainee and the mentor to complete: Placement Record with GLOs and Sections [56.0kb]. Beware though - don't get too complex, most providers will only embrace your monitoring and evaluation if it's straightforward and similar to their own forms.

Finally, most partners will not wish to undertake monitoring and assessment lightly. It is important to conduct any monitoring and evaluation in association with the other partners. This is particularly important for participating museum, library and archive staff - who in most cases will only have the competence to participate in assessment and will require the support of providers in order that they achieve the quality standards that both the individual course and OfSTED require.
