The Settings Other Than Schools initiative is based on the research carried out by YMLAC in close collaboration with regional museums, libraries, archives and ITT providers during the academic year 2002/3.
The project report from the research phase, 'Settings Other Than Schools', found that there was an appetite to engage with this new agenda but that there were many issues that both ITT providers and museums, libraries and archives staff raised in response to the opportunities offered by the changes in the Qualifying to Teach Standards, S3.1.5 and under the Requirements for Initial Teacher Training R2.5. Many of the concerns were rooted in a lack of awareness by both sectors of the potential for collaboration and the work each sector does.
In particular it found that museum, library or archives (mlas) were unaware of the changes in the Qualifying to Teach Standards. ITT providers were generally not aware of the range of activities and opportunities for learning in mlas and the current Government investment in this area of the heritage sector.
In many cases it was clear that there was a need to advocate the fact that museums, libraries and archives could offer teacher trainees so much more than learning how to plan a school trip. Responses from trainees themselves revealed that concern lay mainly with contribution towards future employment status and approval by head teachers.
The report suggests recommendations and offers two placement models or pathways to follow that can be adapted to the needs of each partner.
